How To: Enhance a Razor-Cut French Bob Using the 'L Technique'

As long as the bob trend is maintaining its chokehold throughout the land, here’s a fierce version of a French bob that plays its precise angles against a soft frame, texture, and movement.

The look is achieved with a razor using the “L Technique,” says award-winning educator Vivienne Mackinder, who points out that to left-handed stylists, it’s the “J Technique.”

“At its foundation, the French bob is based on graduation into the nape to create the classic shape,” Mackinder says, “and the L Technique creates interior texture and layers while sculpting a defined perimeter.”

This cut can be styled with a chic bevel or air-dried for a modish, low-maintenance feel.

Holding the Razor

  • Balance the razor in hand with a light touch – do not grip
  • Fingertips rest on the handle
  • The thumb is bent toward the pinky finger so it can flex and move lightly (versus a locked thumb that puts stress on the wrist, elbow, and shoulders)
  • Keep elbow down for comfort and to slice hair at the correct angle to prevent ripping

The “L” Technique

The dynamic motion of the razor draws the letter “L,” combining two actions in one technique:

  1. Vertical Slice (Internal Texture): The razor moves vertically through hair, carving soft layers inside the shape to creates lightness and internal movement. This removes weight and builds flow.
  2. Horizontal Slice (External Outline): The razor glides horizontally, sketching the perimeter of the haircut while maintaining fluidity. This frames the shape with softness.

The result is a wispy, delicate finish and is ideal for clients who want a feminine, airy style without harsh edges.
