Every transformative leader has a defining moment. For award-winning stylist, educator, salon owner and entrepreneur Rob Burgio, it came in the form of a 4:30 am crashout during the COVID-19 lockdown.
"I was making these terrible YouTube videos in my empty salon, trying to stay sane while everything was shut down," Burgio recalls. "I kept using clips that were too big, too small, or constantly breaking.”
From his sheer frustration came a moment of almost divine inspiration. “At that moment, lightning struck and I envisioned putting a horizontal comb on a sectioning clip."
That lightning bolt would eventually become the Barracuda Comb Clip, designed to conquer traditional sectioning limitations. And now that it’s out, on the market, and racking up enthusiasts from all over the beauty industry, it’s all worth it.
But the journey from concept to creation demanded everything from him: Three different engineers, patent attorneys, countless sleepless nights, and what Burgio describes as "tunnel vision so intense I had to finish it or lose my mind."
Built on Skill, Powered by Stage Presence
A second-generation hairdresser and the owner of Tesoro Salon in Snyder, NY, Burgio is a Goldwell National artist/ educator and founder of the Amplify the Stylist e-commerce platform.
What sets him apart isn’t just his technical prowess. It's his ability to blend foundational excellence with legit rockstar energy — he’s the lead guitarist and vocalist in a Killers tribute band, Mr. Brightside.
"There's something about understanding how to command a room, read an audience, and deliver an experience that translates perfectly to education,” Burgio says. “When Lisa DiPerna from Goldwell selected me for the national artist team, she specifically mentioned feeling that performer energy.”
That performing superpower comes through in the classroom. Burgio is adept at switching up his teaching style to adapt to the students in front of him. Hi "Simon Says" hands-on approach keeps everyone engaged and moving forward.
In his experience training thousands of salon professionals, Burgio has identified a troubling trend: the erosion of fundamental cutting techniques, particularly short haircutting techniques.
"The popularity of balayage and color melting on long hair has created an unintended consequence," he says. "Newer stylists are missing critical foundational skills — understanding graduation, face shape analysis, and precision cutting. It starts in cosmetology schools with minimal fundamental training."
His solution? A comprehensive educational approach that combines time-tested techniques with modern innovation. While trends come and go with various names and influencer interpretations, Burgio focuses on teaching mapping techniques that enable stylists to create any haircut they envision.
"Whether you need round hair or square hair, understanding fundamental mapping techniques means you can adapt to any future trend," he says. "Fundamentals must be mastered before you can create variations."
Burgio is currently developing a certified education program through New York State that would allow cosmetology schools to offer affiliate hours for specialized training in face shapes and fringe techniques.
"The fringe is the first thing clients see and the most touched area of any haircut," he emphasizes. "If you can't execute a perfect fringe, it doesn't matter how great your haircut is — your client won't be happy."
Burgio’s YouTube channel and Facebook group Amplify the Stylist reaches millions with 90-second tutorials. Yet, he maintains that hands-on education is irreplaceable — that digital content is valuable as a pathway or a supplement to in-person learning.
Elevating the Craft — One Class, One Tool at a Time
At the International Beauty Show in Las Vegas, Burgio taught four signature classes designed to drill core foundational knowledge into students of all levels.
And that’s not even all he did there. Burgio launched the latest sharps to join his Amplify the Stylist professional haircutting collection: the Echoblade Razor and the NOVA scissors series, two premium models crafted for precision and creative control.
“I just got this photo from the factory at 6am this morning and I’m super excited about this,” he says, showing off the new image of a NOVA Rift 5.5” slide cutting scissor. “It’s for dry or wet hair. Great for carving,” he says. “It’s for advanced texturizing, soft disconnection, and creating movement.”
Seeking the best of the best comes naturally for Burgio, who attributes his tenacious entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic to his Sicilian heritage. "My parents came here with nothing," he says. "Watching my father grow from Navy serviceman to successful barber and salon owner taught me that talent alone isn't enough.
“It's about hustle, perseverance, and endless energy."
Burgio believes success in beauty isn't about choosing between tradition and innovation, between artistry and business, or between individual achievement and community impact. It's about creating synergy between seemingly opposing forces.
His fellow salon professionals are incredibly receptive to that approach, Burgio has found.
"We're passionate stylists working with passionate stylists," he says. "When you combine that energy with solid fundamentals and a willingness to push boundaries, magic happens."
